Lasara Dragon Head

Rare tête de dragon Lasara, symbole du monde inférieur et supérieur. Elle présente l’animal aux formes surréalistes surmontées d’une large crête sagittale avec excroissances latérales à symbolique florale. Il porte des ornements d’oreilles circulaires, sculptés en relief. Cette œuvre sculptée avec maîtrise faisait partie d’un ensemble formant un siège sacré utilisé pour commémorer une fête organisée par un homme désireux de s’élever dans la hiérarchie sociale et d’acquérir un nouveau grade au sein de la société des hommes.

Statues de jumeaux masculins de style « Oyo » aux corps trapus se tenant debout sur un socle rond, les bras le long du corps. Les visages sont allongés, les têtes dotées de coiffures à haut chignon central, yeux globuleux et la bouche saillante. Les scarifications sont identiques sur les deux visages, à savoir trois traits verticaux sur les pommettes et trois traits horizontaux sur les joues. Les deux figures masculines sont parées d’un vêtement fait de petites perles à motifs géométriques et portent chacune des colliers autour du cou.
Traces de pigment bleu sur la chevelure.

Ce peigne en ivoire est un magnifique témoignage du luxe qui règne en Inde aux périodes les plus anciennes. Les deux faces du peigne représentent différentes scènes érotiques se déroulant dans un palais. Le style des protagonistes parés de lourdes boucles d’oreilles et de bandeaux larges et plats parfois croisés sur le devant de la tête tout en masquant les cheveux est typique des œuvres de la période Shunga. La facture des ivoires de Chandraketugarh suggère un Art de cour, qui peut être rapproché des ivoires du trésor de Begram trouvé en Afghanistan.

The narrative in the relief depicted above is rarely encountered in Gandharan art. It depicts two episodes of the story of Prince Siddhartha’s presence at a wedding where he wishes to prove his power and courage by killing a white elephant. His cousin and rival Devadatta is renowned for being extremely strong and desiring to out-maneuver the Prince, Devadata kills the elephant upon which Prince Siddhartha then tosses the dead elephant out of the city, hereby blocking the entrance to the city.

Large carved marble head of a bull originally from a full figure, perhaps a reference to the sacred bull Apis. Realistically rendered with a furry coat, large almond-shaped eyes, a well-defined muzzle with delineated nostrils and ears. Ancient loss to both horns and scattered minor ancient surface losses, overall excellent ancient surface patina. Custom bronze base. A beautifully carved example.
